A pump system should be periodically checked out. Since proper operation is so important, tracking its performance on a regular schedule can eliminate an untimely emergency. During the check-outs, reports will be generated on all tests and readings, compared to previous visits, and maintained in a file with all other pump station data. Intervals between check-outs can be one week to three months, depending on manpower availability and importance of the system.

Step 1

Inspect the general condition of the lift station components. Look for grease in the pit, debris on the float switches, the condition of the pump and switch cords, and the dampness in the panel. If anything appears out of the ordinary, take corrective action.

Step 2

Operate each pump in the "hand" position. Check and record voltage and amp draw. Look for any leakage around the disconnect fitting. Examine the vent hole, and make sure the opening is not restricted.

Step 3

Check the pump's insulation resistance with a megohmmeter, and record the data.

Step 4

Operate the panel through numerous cycles to verify correct operation and sequencing. If floats are not accessible, use jumper wires as a substitute to the float switches.

Step 5

Conduct a functional test on the pump's performance. Compare the results to tests done in the past, and record this data.

Step 6

Upon completion of the check-out, enter all pertinent data into a pump station log book for future reference.
